Future Plymouth 2030

Sarah Lee (Associate Architect at Stride Treglown) is busy planning a 6 month series of fortnightly webinars focusing on themes related to the Climate Emergency in the Built Environment, issues that we all need to grasp in the construction industry if we stand any chance of achieving Zero Carbon by 2030.

The webinars will use Plymouth as the main topic area, with the Council getting involved to explain their own Action Plan and the University sharing some of their research, knowledge and sustainability aspirations.

SWWIC have a growing list of local and national speakers, from both theoretical and practical backgrounds, including local case studies in the South West. This series will be open to all: students and lecturers, local practitioners and institutes, local businesses, developers and even the general public for FREE!

The programme is still developing and currently looks like this:

4th Nov – RIBA SW Annual Lecture – Peter Clegg of Fielden Clegg Bradley with intro by Paul Barnard, Service Director for Strategic Planning & Infrastructure, PCC
18th Nov – Plymouth/SW Climate Issues – Flooding and Rising Sea Levels
2nd Dec – Embodied Energy and Whole Life Carbon
16th Dec – Zero Carbon, Net Zero, Passivhaus and Better Performing Buildings
13th Jan – Skills – Technology and Innovation
27th Jan – Circular Economy – Elimination of Waste
10th Feb – Biodiversity and Carbon Sequestration – seagrasses specifically in Plymouth
24th Feb – Retrofitting – How do we tackle the Existing Building Stock?
10th Mar – Behaviour Change – Psychology, Energy, Urban interaction & intervention, Refills, Reduce Waste
24th Mar – Behaviour Change – Education (formal and preparation for new world)
7th Apr – Health and Wellbeing – Healthy buildings and environments = healthy people and planet
21st Apr – Urban Design in a post COVID world – increasing cycling, pedestrian areas, biodiversity, food growing, community, the local economy.

SWWIC would be really grateful to receive any thoughts/comments or any recommendations for topic content or brilliant, animated and inspirational speakers that you might have come across recently who would fit into any of these topic areas… or maybe you would like to speak yourself?!!
